The red river hog, also known as the tufted pig, is an animal related to our European wild boar. It lives in West and Central Africa, mainly in the forests of the Guinean and Congolese regions, in a habitat characterized by wooded savannas and forests, near rivers, lakes, and swamps. It has a bright reddish-brown coat, with a white tufted stripe running along its back, from the head to the base of the tail.
It is generally a crepuscular and nocturnal species that usually spends daylight hours hidden in its den, among the swamps, and can lie for hours in the mud, which protects it from heat and insects. It lives in small groups of 5 to 15 individuals, consisting of one adult male and several females.
