The American Flamingo is easily distinguished by its very long feet which are webbed and by its typical arched beak that it uses to filter the surface of the salty water.
In captivity, the coloring of the plumage tends to disappear in a few years. Due to recent research, it is now possible to maintain this coloring by adding red carotenoids or equivalent substances to its food.
