It is called ring-tailed lemure because of the tail hair that alternates in color from black to white. The color of the mantel is mainly gray even if the face, belly and limbs are white. The eyes are surrounded by black hair. An adult weighs about 5-6 kg, its body is approximately 50 cm long and the tail can reach 60 cm in length.
They are diurnal and arboreal, but spend a lot of their time also on the ground. Often, they sun bathe standing erect while sitting on their hind legs.
They live in groups of 10-30 with a female leader. Females mature sexually before two years of age. They reproduce between April and June. Gestation is 146 days long and 1-2 young can be born. Its survival is endangered by the destruction of its forest habitat.
