  • The Scarlet Macaw can reach a length of up to 80-85 cm and a weight of 1kg. The plumage is primarily red, the wings have blue and yellow feathers and the tail is red. Around the eyes there is a white area of bare skin. The upper mandible is an ivory color while the lower one is black. There is no sexual dimorphism between male and female.
Its preferred habitat is forests with tall trees but it has been observed also in the savannah.
These birds usually fly in couples but in some areas they can be seen also in big flocks. They gather in places where they can lick clay.
It is a social and loud bird. It makes very loud squeaks and screams that can be heard from very long distances. It reaches sexual maturity at around 6-7 years of age. The female lays 1-4 white eggs inside a tree cavity. They are incubated for 25-27 days. Weaning lasts for around 12 weeks. The Scarlet Macaw can live a long time, even up to 80 years.
Nowadays, there are 4000-5000 Scarlet Macaws but poaching and the destruction of their habit are decimating their population.
