A while ago, the keeper had a simple role as a guardian or as a maintainer of the several sections of the park. Today, this position assumed a fundamental importance for zoological gardens and aquaria. In fact, they are human resources who always keep a direct contact with animals, shield and nurse them. They are therefore able to supervise their behaviors, tensions, nutrition etc.., and also to demand veterinary intervention when necessary.
